Today we talk about plants during Learning Time. We drew different kinds of plants and flowers, colored them with pencils and crayons, and wrote the name of every color beside each drawing. After that, we explained that if you plant a seed, put the pot in a sunny place and water it every day, the seed germinates and grows until it turns into a plant that can have flowers. Then, we talked about the flowers producing nectar, which bugs and insects like to suck and then the pollen gets stuck in their leg hair or body hair and it's carried from one flower to another. We explained that leads to the production of seeds, that can be collected once the flower dries and planted so another plant can grow. Also, it was mentioned that some people are allergic to pollen, and sneeze when it's in the air.
After the talk, we watched the video and commented on the different parts of the process and of the plant, sometimes stopping the movie for a longer explanation (if the kid's old enough).
Finally, the big flower was shown to the kid and she was asked to recognize, point and name the different parts of the flower after having done that ourselves twice. It's perfectly fine if they only retain half the information or less, the idea is to broaden their minds and make them think, not expect them to know this for life.
The planting activity was scheduled for the following day, where the kid was encouraged and helped to make a small hole in the soil and plant the seed (we chose apple because she wanted an apple tree). Then it was put in a sunny corner and watered.
